Abstract

Despite having made its first application for EEC membership in 1959, Turkey's bid to join the EU remains as controversial as ever, with Turkey and EU relations arguably at an all-time low in the aftermath of the attempted coup d'état of July 2016. In this context, the essays here, while using (de)Europeanisation as a broad theoretical framework, explore the current state of Turkey's EU accession bid from a variety of perspectives, including discourse analysis, Euroscepticism and institutionalist approaches. The essays focus not only on discursive and policy (de)Europeanisation within Turkey, but also examine both official EU and European right-wing Eurosceptic discourse on Turkish accession, as well as approaching the Turkish accession process through comparisons with the contemporary Western Balkan countries and with post-war Germany.

Abstract

"The majority of policymakers, academics, and members of the general public expected British citizens to vote to remain in the European Union in the 2016 referendum. This perception was based on the well-established idea that voters don't like change or uncertainty. So why did the British public vote to take such a major economic risk? Framing Risky Choices addresses this question by placing the Brexit vote in the bigger picture of EU and Scottish independence referendums. Drawing from extensive interviews and survey data, it asserts that the framing effect--mobilizing voters by encouraging them to think along particular lines--matters, but not every argument is equally effective. Simple, evocative, and emotionally compelling frames that offer negativity are especially effective in changing people's minds. In the Brexit case, the Leave side neutralized the economic risks of Brexit and proposed other risks relating to remaining in the EU, such as losing control of immigration policy and a lack of funding for the National Health Service. These concrete, impassioned arguments struck an immediate and familiar chord with voters. Most intriguingly, the Remain side was silent on these issues, without an emotional case to present. Framing Risky Choices presents a multi-method, comparative, state-of-the-art analysis of how the Brexit campaign contributed to the outcome. Uncovering the core mechanism behind post-truth politics, it shows that the strength of an argument is not its empirical validity but its public appeal."--.

Abstract

This book aims at studying the evolution of the internal market of the European Union, analyzing how to harmonize the national laws of the Member States on the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital and then proposing to increase administrative convergence between Member State administrations, from the desire to increase the degree of integration and interconnection of states within the single market. This research carried out contributes to the opening of new research directions in the field of European Union law: regulating the convergence between the economies of the European Union states that make up the European Economic Area; interdisciplinarity in the study of the European Union. The book contributes to the development of sub-issues of European Union law - the Law of the internal market of the European Union, which until now has not received any particular attention from the doctrine, although practice has shown that there are many problems that call for in-depth research to provide solutions to increase efficiency in the functioning of the single market.

Abstract

To underpin occupational safety and health (OSH) education in schools and colleges it is necessary to formalise it in curriculum requirements. This report reviews how the Member States are including OSH and risk education in their national curricula. The report shows that there is considerable progress and activity in this respect at both primary and secondary education levels in terms of both implemented and planned actions in the Member States. The report also identifies some success factors for mainstreaming OSH into education curricula.
